President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, will be accorded a state burial. Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady passed away on Thursday, October 23, while receiving treatment at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
During a commiseration visit to the bereaved family in Accra on Tuesday, October 28, President Mahama eulogized Nana Konadu for her lifelong dedication to women’s empowerment. “She took women’s empowerment as her focus. When you go around the country, you see evidence of her work,” he said, highlighting the impact of her contributions.
On behalf of the people of Ghana and the government, President Mahama extended his condolences and sympathy to the family. He assured the family that the government would work closely with them to plan a fitting state funeral. “We will work closely with the family. We’re waiting for the family to meet and tell us their desire. But I just want to announce as President that we shall give her a state funeral,” he said.
The state funeral will be followed by a traditional funeral, which the family can organize at a later date. “The family can do the traditional funeral after the state funeral. Once we know what the dates are, we will do the programme and the state will give her the full honours that she deserves,” President Mahama added.
Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, the First Lady’s eldest child and Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, expressed her gratitude to President Mahama for his support during the family’s period of grief. The state burial is a testament to Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings’ dedication to the people of Ghana and her contributions to the nation’s development.
