The Minority in Parliament has criticized a High Court decision annulling the 2024 parliamentary election in the Kpandai constituency, describing the ruling as “judicial irresponsibility”. Justice Emmanuel Brew Plange of the Tamale High Court ordered a fresh election within 30 days, citing “extensive irregularities” in the conduct of the original poll.
Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin told reporters that the caucus would challenge any attempt to remove sitting MP Matthew Nyindam before the full legal process has been completed. “The judgment can only be described as breathtaking in its reach and alarming in its implications,” Afenyo-Markin said.
Afenyo-Markin accused the judge of failing to provide a complete, published ruling before voiding the results, calling it “judicial irresponsibility of the highest order”. “For a judge to casually void an entire constituency’s election without first ensuring that a complete, reasoned judgment was prepared and published is not merely irregular. It is judicial irresponsibility of the highest order,” he said.
The Minority Leader’s reaction suggests the caucus is gearing up to challenge the court’s decision and defend MP Nyindam’s seat.
