The Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has criticized the government for its delay in constituting the Road Fund Board, citing it as a major setback to the country’s road infrastructure development. Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Afenyo-Markin expressed frustration over the government’s inaction, stating that the delay has resulted in unpaid contractors and worsening financial distress in the private sector.
Afenyo-Markin questioned the government’s commitment to implementing its own policies, particularly when it had previously amended the governing legislation to facilitate the board’s formation. He demanded transparency on how funds released into the Road Fund were being utilized, given that the absence of the board was cited as the reason for delayed contractor payments.
The Minority Leader’s concerns are echoed by previous calls from his predecessor, Haruna Iddrisu, who urged the government to constitute the Road Fund Board to enable payment of contractors. The delay has led to several road projects being stalled, with contractors abandoning sites due to non-payment.
The government has approved GHS 5.3 billion for the Ministry of Roads and Highways, but Afenyo-Markin warned that the absence of the Road Fund Board would hinder effective implementation of road projects.
