Elikem Kotoko, a Ghanaian commentator, has revealed that many young people who flocked to the El-Wak Stadium for military recruitment were driven by economic desperation, seeking survival and a steady income. Kotoko’s comments come in the wake of a tragic stampede at the stadium, which claimed six lives and left several others injured.
Kotoko emphasized that the incident highlights the country’s economic challenges and the lack of job opportunities for young people. He urged the government to address the root causes of poverty and unemployment, rather than just focusing on recruitment numbers.
The Ghana Armed Forces has suspended recruitment activities in Accra pending an investigation into the incident. The government has promised to provide support to the affected families and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
