US actor Michael B. Jordan has claimed a surprise victory at the Actor Awards, formerly the Screen Actors Guild Awards, boosting his momentum as the Oscars approach.
Jordan won best actor for his performance in the vampire horror Sinners, which also took the night’s top honour — best ensemble cast.
“I don’t even know where to begin; I wasn’t expecting this at all,” Jordan said in his acceptance speech, adding that he felt “so honoured and privileged” to have been nominated.
His co-star Delroy Lindo accepted the ensemble award, describing the making of Sinners as an “incredible journey.”
“Every single day we brought ourselves, our hearts, and our souls to this endeavor,” Lindo said. “To be recognised by you all, ‘thank you’ does not come anywhere near to encompassing what we feel, the gratitude.”
The awards for Sinners came days after the British Academy of Film and Television Arts ceremony, where Jordan and Lindo were praised for their composure after an incident in which a campaigner with Tourette’s involuntarily shouted a racial slur while they were on stage.
Other winners at the Actor Awards included Sean Penn for One Battle After Another and Jessie Buckley for Hamnet. Amy Madigan secured a surprise supporting actress win for Weapons, while Catherine O’Hara received a posthumous award for The Studio.

Jordan used his speech to honour his mother, Donna, who has accompanied him to events throughout awards season.
“Mom, thank you for driving me back and forth to New York when we didn’t have enough money to go through the Harlem tunnel, when we were looking for gas money and parking spaces,” he said.
He also acknowledged director Ryan Coogler and the Sinners production team.
“Everybody that had something to do with this movie, you gave us your time and your talents and vulnerability and allowed me to do my best work,” Jordan added.
Voting for the Actor Awards closed five days after the BAFTA ceremony, where the incident on stage sparked discussion about respect and inclusion in the arts.
Lindo addressed the matter at the NAACP Image Awards, praising the support the actors received.
“It’s a classic case of something that could’ve been very negative becoming very positive,” he said, thanking audiences for their solidarity.
