President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to meet with the Chief Justice, Attorney General, and other key officials to devise lasting solutions to the rampant misuse of public funds in Ghana. The meeting, scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2025, aims to address the persistent mismanagement of state resources highlighted in the Auditor-General’s reports.

The President’s decision follows his observation of the Public Accounts Committee hearing, which he described as “pathetic” due to the poor level of accountability. He lamented the repeated cases of financial irregularities across public institutions, emphasizing that the financial losses identified by the Auditor-General could have been channeled into national development initiatives if properly managed.

To tackle this issue, the meeting will focus on establishing a fast-track accountability mechanism to prosecute public officials implicated in financial infractions and ensure swift punishment for those found guilty. The President also stressed the need for strengthening inter-agency collaboration to curb financial irregularities and promote transparency in public institutions.

Furthermore, the meeting will review laws and enforcement to ensure personal liability for public officials involved in financial irregularities and enhance digital audit systems. The President also emphasized the importance of implementing constitutional provisions to establish a committee to monitor the Auditor-General’s findings and ensure effective implementation of recommendations.

President Mahama emphasized the need for accountability, stating that “until people know they will be held responsible for misusing public resources, nothing will change.” The meeting’s outcomes are expected to form part of a new National Anti-Corruption and Accountability Framework to be presented to Cabinet later this month.
