Former President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a bold plan to prioritize road infrastructure in Ghana, starting with the construction of 10 kilometers of roads, drains, and pavements in each of the country’s 166 constituencies annually from next year. This initiative aims to enhance the aesthetics of communities while improving sanitation.
Speaking at the relaunch of the National Sanitation Day at the Institute of Local Government Studies in Accra, President Mahama emphasized the importance of linking road infrastructure development with sanitation efforts. “From next year, we will do 10 kilometers of roads and drains per constituency so that we can improve the general environment of our districts,” he stated. The President explained that this program will also serve as an incentive for districts to maintain cleanliness, noting that rehabilitating roads and building drains would be futile if they are littered with garbage.

The initiative is part of President Mahama’s broader vision to improve the country’s infrastructure and promote a cleaner environment. By focusing on road construction and sanitation, the government aims to create a more livable and sustainable environment for all Ghanaians.
Link to 24-Hour Economy Plan
The President also linked the road initiative to his flagship 24-hour economy plan. He proposed moving sanitation services such as refuse collection and cesspit emptying to nighttime to reduce traffic congestion and public nuisance. This approach, he argued, would not only improve sanitation but also enhance the efficiency of urban services.
By prioritizing road infrastructure and sanitation, President Mahama’s government aims to create a cleaner, more sustainable, and economically vibrant Ghana. The initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of Ghanaians, improving their quality of life and promoting economic development.
