President John Mahama has called on political leaders and those in authority to prioritize democracy over partisanship, authoritarianism, and impunity. Speaking at the Jubilee House on September 2, 2025, Mahama emphasized that democracy goes beyond elections and requires accountability, fairness, and justice.
He highlighted the importance of strong and independent institutions in a thriving democracy. Mahama stressed that democracy is not just about periodic elections but also about creating a society where every Ghanaian can aspire and achieve regardless of their background. He emphasized that democracy thrives only when institutions are strong, transparent, and independent, and leaders govern with humility, prioritizing the people’s interests.Mahama urged citizens to be vigilant and participate in the democratic process by holding leaders accountable, rejecting violence, valuing diversity, and defending freedoms.
Mahama’s comments come less than 24 hours after he removed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office on grounds of stated misbehavior, following a committee’s probe.
