A second tragedy struck in Kumasi today, as five applicants collapsed during the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, with one person in critical condition. This incident comes just hours after a devastating stampede at El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, where six young women died and 28 were injured, with five in ICU.
The Ghana Armed Forces has suspended the recruitment exercise pending an investigation into the incidents. President John Mahama has ordered a full investigation, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures and crowd management.
The Accra tragedy has sparked widespread outrage, highlighting Ghana’s pressing youth unemployment crisis, with nearly 39% of young people unemployed and over 1.25 million youth not working, not in school, and not in training.
The incidents have raised concerns about crowd management and safety measures during large-scale recruitment exercises, with experts calling for urgent action to address the unemployment crisis and prevent future tragedies.
