The Majority Caucus in Parliament is calling for the Speaker to declare the Kpandai seat vacant following a Tamale High Court decision that annulled the 2024 parliamentary election results in the constituency. The court ruled that irregularities at 41 polling stations compromised the election’s integrity, and a rerun has been ordered.

Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor argues that MP Matthew Nyindam should step aside from parliamentary duties until the rerun is conducted, citing precedent set by the Assin North case. However, the Minority Caucus insists that Nyindam remains the legitimate MP and will resist any attempt to remove him before all legal processes are concluded.

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has slammed the judiciary, accusing judges of acting in the interest of “paymasters”. The Speaker, Alban Bagbin, now faces pressure to declare the seat, with the Majority arguing that Nyindam’s continued participation in parliamentary proceedings is unjustified.

The Honourable Member is part of the 87 Minority MPs, and it is his turn to debate,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated. “Mr. Speaker, unless our friend, the Majority Chief Whip, wants to use physical means to disobey your order and deny the Member of Parliament his right to represent his people who elected him.”

The exchange prompted intervention from the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, who presided over the sitting. He revealed that Speaker Alban Bagbin had issued instructions for the House to suspend all discussions on Mr. Nyindam’s status until further notice.

“The Speaker has indicated that I should freeze this particular matter relating to Honourable Nyindam,” Mr. Asiamah said. “Therefore, I will not make any comment on it, and I pray that we suspend the debate on the Budget and do other business for the day.”
