President John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to the late Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, describing her as a pioneering leader and trailblazer who left an indelible mark on Ghana’s history. Speaking at a special service to commemorate her life and legacy, President Mahama recalled her unwavering commitment to empowering women and her instrumental role in promoting gender equality in Ghana.
Nana Konadu, who passed away on November 22, 2023, was more than just a former First Lady; she was a fierce advocate for women’s rights and a champion of social justice. As the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, she mobilized thousands of women to participate in politics and decision-making, shattering glass ceilings and paving the way for future generations.
President Mahama praised Nana Konadu’s courage, resilience, and dedication to public service, noting that her legacy would continue to inspire Ghanaians, particularly women, to strive for excellence. He emphasized that her contributions to Ghana’s development, especially in the areas of women’s empowerment and education, would never be forgotten.
Nana Konadu’s impact extended beyond Ghana’s borders, as she played a leading role in regional and international efforts to promote women’s rights and development. Her trailblazing spirit and leadership will be deeply missed, but her legacy will live on, inspiring and empowering generations to come.
Delivering a tribute read on his behalf at Konadu’s State funeral, President Mahama said the nation was mourning “a truly remarkable woman” whose legacy would endure for generations.
“She was a towering national figure whose influence, courage, and contributions to Ghana will continue to resonate for generations.”
He said that Nana Konadu was far more than a former First Lady. “She was a pioneering leader, an unwavering champion of women’s empowerment, a trailblazer in our political landscape, and a deeply committed patriot,” he said.
Mr Mahama explained that her life was marked by boldness and conviction. “Her life story is one defined by boldness, boldness to speak, to challenge, to lead, and to stand resolutely for what she believed was right for Ghana.
