Former Assin Central Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has called on his supporters to remain steadfast and disciplined following what he described as a disappointing outcome in the party’s presidential primary.
Addressing party faithful at his campaign office on Saturday, January 31, Mr Agyapong acknowledged the setback but stressed that the results do not signal the end of his political ambitions or the contributions of his supporters to the NPP.
His address came at a time when emotions were high among supporters, as provisional results from across the country pointed to a decisive outcome in the keenly contested race.“The worst has happened, but that’s not the end of the road,” he told the gathering, striking a tone of resilience and reflection.
“Politics is a long journey, and sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. What matters is how you conduct yourself after the results.”Kennedy Ohene Agyapong
Mr Agyapong expressed appreciation to his supporters for their dedication and sacrifices throughout the campaign period, describing their commitment as invaluable. He noted that the energy and loyalty demonstrated during the contest would not be forgotten, even in the face of defeat.
“I am proud of all of you for the work you have done,” he said, acknowledging the efforts of party members who worked tirelessly on his behalf. At the same time, he urged restraint, cautioning against any actions or utterances that could worsen divisions within the party.
“I want everybody to stay peaceful and disciplined. The NPP is bigger than all of us, and we must protect it,” Mr Agyapong added, underscoring the importance of preserving party unity after a bruising internal contest.
Call for Party Unity

Central to Mr Agyapong’s message was a call for reconciliation and unity within the NPP as it prepares for future electoral battles. He reminded supporters that internal competitions, no matter how intense, should not undermine the party’s collective goal of winning national power.
“At the end of the day, we are one family.
“We may have competed fiercely, but after the contest, we must come together and support the party to move forward.”Kennedy Ohene Agyapong
His remarks reflect growing calls within the NPP for calm and cohesion as the party transitions from internal competition to national mobilisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The NPP presidential primaries, which concluded on Saturday, are widely regarded as one of the most competitive internal elections in the party’s history.
Several high-profile candidates vied for the flagbearer position, generating significant interest among party members and the general public.
The exercise tested the party’s internal democratic structures and highlighted differing visions for the NPP’s future. Despite the intensity of the campaign, party leaders have repeatedly emphasised the need for unity once the process is completed.
Bawumia Opens Commanding Lead

As Mr Agyapong addressed his supporters, provisional results from several constituencies indicated that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia had opened a commanding lead in the NPP presidential primaries.
Early tallies from multiple polling centres across the country suggest that Dr Bawumia performed strongly in key constituencies, placing him in a favourable position to secure the party’s flagbearer slot for the 2028 general elections.
The steady flow of results has reinforced expectations of a decisive victory, although the final outcome is subject to official confirmation by party authorities.
Mr Agyapong’s response to the unfolding results has been seen by observers as an attempt to set a tone of maturity and responsibility in the aftermath of the primaries. By urging calm and discipline, he signalled his commitment to the party’s broader interests beyond personal ambition.
For many supporters, his message served as reassurance that their efforts were not in vain and that their role within the NPP remains important. As the party moves beyond the presidential primaries, attention is expected to shift towards reconciliation, strategic planning, and preparation for the next general election.
While the immediate focus remains on the final declaration of results, Mr Agyapong’s remarks highlight a crucial phase in the NPP’s political journey, one that demands unity, reflection, and renewed focus as the party charts its path toward 2028.
