Kennedy Agyapong, flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has outlined a bold plan to relocate the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to Tamale in the Northern Region if he wins the party’s internal elections and becomes president. This move, he believes, will position Tamale as a central hub for agricultural production and innovation.
Agyapong’s government would prioritize vegetable production in the Northern Region, leveraging Tamale’s strategic location to export fresh produce directly to the European market via Tamale Airport. With flight times from Tamale to London being just five hours, Agyapong envisions Ghana becoming a key supplier of fresh produce to Europe. “By the time the British wake up in the morning, all our pineapples, carrots, and vegetables are on their market,” he said.
Massive investment in agriculture and agro-processing is expected to create jobs for the youth and develop the economy, reducing reliance on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. Agyapong emphasized that his plan would focus on agriculture and agro-processing industries, creating a robust value chain that supports local farmers and boosts foreign exchange earnings.
The relocation of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to Tamale is part of Agyapong’s broader decentralization plan, aimed at promoting balanced national development and reducing the economic pressure on Accra. “Anytime you go to the IMF for loans, it means you have failed your people,” Agyapong, adding that his government would prioritize job creation and economic development.
