The Madina District Court has discharged Daniel Owusu Koranteng, the suspect accused of murdering investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, due to insufficient evidence. Suale, a member of the Tiger Eye P.I. investigative team, was shot and killed in January 2019 by unknown assailants. The prosecution alleged that Koranteng led two other suspects to Suale’s residence, where he was eventually shot and killed.

The court’s decision to discharge Koranteng follows a review of the evidence and legal advice from the Office of the Attorney-General, which found that:

The Attorney General’s office concluded that the evidence was insufficient to sustain the charges of abetment and murder. The call records that allegedly linked Koranteng to the crime were deemed inconclusive and failed to establish any direct or circumstantial connection to the murder. None of the police sketches based on eyewitness accounts matched the accused.

The prosecution has been directed to refocus investigations on identifying the two gunmen who carried out the attack and remain at large six years after the killing. The court’s decision is expected to reignite public debate over the state’s commitment to securing justice for Suale’s murder.

The case has been ongoing for over six years, and Suale’s family has expressed disappointment over the slow pace of the investigation. Local rights groups have also raised concerns about the government’s handling of the case, particularly after political leaders cast doubt on links between the killing and Suale’s work.
