Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the nominee for Chief Justice, has impressed Parliament’s Appointments Committee with his “outstanding competence” and “deep understanding of the law”. The Committee, chaired by Bernard Ahiafor, has recommended Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s approval to the full House, citing his professionalism, clarity, and intellectual rigor during the vetting process.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has served as a Supreme Court Judge for 17 years, pledged to restore public confidence in the judiciary, emphasizing transparency, efficiency, and accountability. He plans to leverage technology, including artificial intelligence, to enhance the judiciary’s performance and accessibility.

The nomination has not been without controversy, with the Minority caucus initially opposing the vetting process due to pending court cases involving former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. However, Speaker Alban Bagbin ruled that Parliament has the constitutional right to proceed with the vetting.
