The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to consider paying the removed Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, her entitlements on humanitarian grounds. Despite acknowledging that Torkornoo’s actions may have been misconstrued as “romancing a stone,” Gyampo believes that paying her entitlements would be a gesture of goodwill.
Gyampo’s appeal is based on humanitarian grounds, emphasizing the need for compassion and understanding in the treatment of the removed Chief Justice. The removed Chief Justice was removed from office following the recommendation of the Justice Pwamang-led committee and has since filed a fresh judicial review application at the High Court, seeking to quash the committee’s findings and recommendations.
A private legal practitioner, Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, has defended Torkornoo’s decision to seek judicial review, describing it as a bold step that advances the cause of justice and fairness for all Ghanaian women. Brako-Powers argued that Torkornoo has legitimate grounds to question the procedure adopted by the Justice Pwamang Committee and that her challenge is not merely personal but represents a broader fight for fairness, integrity, and judicial independence in Ghana’s governance system.
Brako-Powers emphasized that the 1992 Constitution must be interpreted as a coherent whole and not in isolation, and that attempts to interpret it narrowly to justify politically motivated actions risk undermining the spirit of Ghana’s democracy. “Any interpretation that ignores these principles undermines the very soul of the Constitution and must be rejected,” he stressed.
