The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed Kenneth Ashigbey, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, to immediately cease using the title “Dr.” after declaring his doctoral certificate from the Swiss Management Centre (SMC) invalid.
According to GTEC, an investigation into a petition challenging the legitimacy of Ashigbey’s Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree revealed discrepancies between his certificate and transcript. While the certificate was issued by the Swiss Management Centre (SMC), the transcript bore the name Swiss Management Centre (SMC) University.
Key Findings: The certificate and transcript had different institutional names, raising concerns about the document’s authenticity. The DBA programme lasted nine years, from February 10, 2010, to December 30, 2019, which GTEC found unusual. The Swiss Management Centre’s official website only refers to the institution as “Swiss Management Centre”, consistent with the name on the certificate.
GTEC has instructed Ashigbey to provide evidence that he has removed the “Dr.” title from all official and professional materials, including websites, letterheads, and digital platforms. The Commission’s decision aligns with its mandate to uphold academic credibility and protect the integrity of Ghana’s education system.
