There is growing grassroots support for Julius Debrah, the current Chief of Staff, to run for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer position in the 2028 election. This surge in support comes as President John Mahama is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term. Many NDC members believe Debrah has the potential to lead the party to victory in 2028, citing his exemplary leadership and humility.
Abambila John, a member of the Ashanti Regional Communications Team of the NDC, is one of Debrah’s key supporters. According to John, Ghanaians want Debrah to succeed President Mahama, and he has been engaging with various groups, including traders, businessmen, and youths, who all yearn for Debrah to lead the party in 2028. John emphasized that Debrah is a winnable candidate for the NDC and urged the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Functional Executive Committee (FEC) to support Debrah when the time is right.
Debrah’s leadership experience as former and current Chief of Staff has earned him a strong reputation, positioning him as a potential NDC presidential candidate. His humility and respect for all have been consistently demonstrated in the Mahama administration, showcasing his ability to lead with integrity. Additionally, his commitment to Ghana’s development and progress has garnered support from many NDC members, who believe he can rally the party and the nation.
While Debrah is gaining momentum, other potential candidates are also being considered. Hon. Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, the current Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, is another name rising to the top. Thomas Dindiego, a former NDC Constituency Communications Officer, supports Oppong-Fosu, citing his ability to unite the party and bridge divides within the NDC.
Abambila John commended Debrah for his continuous demonstration of good leadership and humility, saying, “Mr. Julius Debrah has been humbling ever since he became a Member of Parliament (MP), minister and currently Ghana’s Chief of Staff…Mr. Debrah continues to showcase his humility and respect for all. This is a kind of leader we all need to emulate. If he decides to contest, it’ll be a good idea.” John added that when Debrah declares to contest as NDC flagbearer, they’ll all help him to win and become the next president.
