The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, says government will need about GH¢500 million to properly deal with the current oversupply of food items across the country.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, November 10, 2025, the Minister said his ministry is taking a data-driven approach to solve the challenge and ensure that the extra food does not go to waste.
According to him, the situation must be handled carefully, otherwise farmers will lose interest in farming if they keep running at a loss.
“You do not just get up and move into a farm because there is a glut. You need to move there with your technical team to ascertain the amount of farm produce to be procured,” he said.
He added that from the figures available to the ministry, government will need about GH¢500 million to clear the excess food from the market.
Mr. Opoku disclosed that the government is already in talks with the World Food Programme and other development partners to find lasting solutions and prevent future food gluts.
He said managing the situation successfully will motivate farmers to continue investing in agriculture because it will remain profitable.
“But if we don’t act and allow these foods to go to waste, it will be a huge loss of the century, and people will be demotivated,” he warned.
The intervention is part of government’s broader plan to stabilise food prices, protect farmers’ income and support sustainable food production nationwide.
