The government has announced plans to purchase excess maize, rice, and eggs from farmers to alleviate the burden of surplus produce and stabilize market prices. President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the National Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) to acquire the excess produce, with an initial allocation of GH¢100 million already expended.

To further support farmers, Mahama has directed the Finance Minister to release an additional GH¢200 million for the purchase of surplus maize. The government has also sanctioned an extra GH¢100 million for NAFCO to continue buying directly from farmers.

NAFCO will buy surplus maize, rice, and eggs from farmers to stabilize market prices, support farmers, and ensure food security. Eggs will be purchased and added to students’ meals to support farmers and improve nutrition.

The move is expected to benefit farmers nationwide, particularly those growing rice, maize, and other grains. The government has urged farmers to sell their produce at guaranteed minimum prices, ensuring fair earnings and stabilizing the agricultural value chain.
