A high-powered government delegation, led by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohamed-Mubarak, has convened a closed-door meeting with the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, in Damongo to address the recent tensions in the Sawla-Bole area of the Savannah Region. The delegation includes senior officials such as the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. William Agyapong; Inspector-General of Police, Patrick Tetteh Yohunu; Director-General of Prisons, Patience Baffoe Bonnie; Comptroller-General of Immigration, Samuel Amandu Bansintale; and Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Lawrence Gbetamu Nana Adu-Gyamfi.
The meeting aims to foster dialogue, peacefully resolve outstanding disputes, and restore peace and order in the region. President John Mahama initiated measures to calm the situation after renewed tensions in the area, and during a state visit to Singapore, he held a telephone conversation with Yagbonwura to discuss peace incentives.
The government’s efforts come after a recent land-related conflict in Gbiniyiri, which has spread to parts of Sawla, Tuna, and Bole, prompting concerns about the social impact, including the displacement of essential workers and disruption of families and livelihoods. The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Damongo, Most Rev. Peter Paul Angkyier, has appealed for peace and dialogue, urging leaders and community members to support mediation processes and cooperate with committees set up to address the root causes of the dispute
