The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is resolute in its fight against illicit gold trading, with Deputy CEO Richard Nunekpeku assuring that the agency won’t yield to political pressure to release suspects involved in the illegal activity. This assurance comes after 25 individuals were recently apprehended in Accra for gold smuggling and other related offenses.
Nunekpeku emphasized that GoldBod operates within the confines of the law, respecting the rights of every individual arrested and providing them with a fair opportunity to represent themselves in court. “At GoldBod, if you fall foul of the law, we don’t know any party colour, no call from anybody, we will not succumb to any pressure,” he stated.
The agency has also received a fiat from the Attorney General to prosecute cases related to gold smuggling and illegal trading, allowing GoldBod to assign its own lawyers to lead prosecution. Nunekpeku highlighted plans to establish specialized courts to adjudicate illicit gold businesses, enhancing enforcement efforts.
GoldBod’s stance against illicit gold trading demonstrates its commitment to upholding the law and protecting Ghana’s gold resources.
