Ghana’s former President, John Dramani Mahama, has launched the ‘Nkoko Nketenkete’ initiative, a flagship program aimed at revitalizing the country’s poultry industry. The program will support 50 carefully selected anchor farmers across the country, providing each with 80,000 birds, housing, logistics, and technical assistance.

The initiative is expected to produce four million birds annually, stimulating local feed demand and establishing direct market connections between producers and processors. This move is part of Mahama’s broader agricultural transformation agenda, aiming to empower farmers, boost food security, and promote sustainable livelihoods.

The program’s key highlights include supporting 50 anchor farmers nationwide, producing four million birds annually, equivalent to 10,000 metric tons of chicken production. Additionally, 55,000 households are expected to benefit from backyard poultry farming, helping to reduce Ghana’s annual poultry import bill of $400 million.

The program also includes a household component, targeting 55,000 households to rear 500 birds annually, producing over one million birds and enhancing household income, especially for women. This initiative is expected to reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported poultry products and promote food sovereignty.
