President John Dramani Mahama has launched the ‘Nkoko Nketenkete’ initiative, a nationwide program aimed at revitalizing Ghana’s poultry industry. The project involves distributing three million birds across all 276 constituencies, with each constituency receiving 10,000 birds to benefit approximately 60,000 households.
The initiative is part of Mahama’s broader Feed Ghana Programme, which seeks to make the country self-sufficient in poultry production. Ghana currently spends over $350 million annually on poultry imports, a situation Mahama described as “unsustainable”. The program aims to achieve 75% self-sufficiency in poultry production by 2028.
Under the initiative, beneficiaries will receive 50 vaccinated birds each, and the project is expected to create jobs, promote rural livelihoods, and enhance food security. A modern poultry processing factory is also set to be established in Bechem, Bono Region, to support the industry’s growth.
Mahama has called on traditional and religious leaders, development partners, and the private sector to support the initiative, emphasizing its potential to transform Ghana’s agricultural sector.
