The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) of Ghana is set to upgrade its international travel documents to meet global standards. This move aims to address the occasional rejection of Ghanaian International Driver’s Licences (IDLs) and International Vehicle Permits (IVPs) by foreign countries.
The upgrade will introduce a Biometric International Driver’s Licence and a Biometric International Vehicle Permit, each featuring a bio-data page designed to fully comply with International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) specifications. This is part of a strategic initiative to create a modern, secure, and globally verifiable system for Ghanaian drivers and vehicles traveling abroad.
The new biometric documents will be issued at all DVLA stations nationwide starting in 2026. This development is expected to benefit Ghanaians living abroad and those traveling internationally, enhancing the global recognition and security of Ghanaian travel documents, simplifying international travel, and facilitating cross-border vehicle use.
