President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to prioritize locally produced chicken over imported options, aiming to bolster the nation’s poultry sector. Speaking at the launch of the ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ Poultry Initiative in Kumasi, Mahama emphasized the need to reduce Ghana’s heavy dependence on imported poultry, which costs the country over $300 million annually.
The ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ project is expected to cover 55,000 households, producing eggs and fresh poultry for the market, and helping to reduce poultry imports. Mahama directed Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to release an additional GHC200 million to purchase surplus maize and rice from farmers affected by a nationwide food glut.
To achieve its goals, the initiative focuses on boosting local production, supporting farmers, improving infrastructure, and promoting self-sufficiency. Specifically, the project aims to increase local poultry production, provide farmers with essential resources, develop agro-production enclaves and modern irrigation systems, and empower households and communities to cultivate vegetables and engage in crop production and livestock farming.
Mahama’s initiative aims to position agriculture as a profitable and appealing sector, making it more attractive to the youth and contributing to Ghana’s economic growth.
