The Government of Ghana, under President John Dramani Mahama, has announced a state funeral for the late Former First Lady, Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, to be held on November 28, 2025, at Independence Square in Accra. The funeral honors her contributions to women’s and children’s rights, national development, and her legacy as a pioneering advocate for gender equality.
Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, wife of former President Jerry John Rawlings, served as First Lady from 1981 to 2001, founding the 31st December Women’s Movement, which championed women’s participation in governance, education, and economic independence. Her commitment to social justice earned national and international recognition.
The ceremony will attract dignitaries, officials, and representatives from women’s groups and civil society organizations inspired by her work. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is remembered as a bold, visionary leader who shaped Ghana’s social and political landscape for over four decades.
