Ghana’s Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government is finalizing the procurement of a DNA testing machine for the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. The machine is expected to arrive within the next few months, strengthening the country’s diagnostic, forensic, and research capabilities.
The decision follows a tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two ministers, highlighting the need for local DNA testing facilities. Previously, biological samples had to be sent abroad for analysis. President Nana Akufo-Addo directed the procurement of the machine, and the purchase order has already been placed.
Minister Akandoh emphasized that the new equipment will enhance national research and diagnostic capabilities, reduce reliance on foreign laboratories, and support medical research. “It is no more a promise; it is something that is in action,” he said.
The machine’s arrival will enable Ghana’s scientific institutions to respond promptly to health and forensic emergencies, marking a significant step forward in the country’s medical research and diagnostic capabilities.
