Ghana’s Black Stars suffered a frustrating 1-1 draw against Chad in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, held at the Stade Olympique Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno in N’Djamena. Despite dominating the game and taking an early lead, Ghana couldn’t maintain their advantage against a resilient Chadian side.

The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Jordan Ayew scored, extending his impressive scoring streak to six goals in the campaign. Ayew’s intelligent movement allowed him to slot home a low cross from Mohammed Kudus, who had broken past his marker on the right flank. Ghana continued to create scoring opportunities but struggled to convert them into goals.

Chad, guided by new coach Raoul Savoy, showed great determination and discipline despite being under sustained pressure. Their perseverance paid off in the 89th minute when Young Africans SC forward Ecua Celestin scored a brilliant goal, picking up the ball just outside the Ghana penalty area and unleashing a perfectly placed strike that flew past goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

The draw leaves Ghana still atop Group I but with a smaller margin for error as the qualifiers move into their decisive stages. Ghana will now face Mali on Monday, September 8, 2025. The Black Stars will need to regroup and come up with a winning strategy to secure the points they need to move closer to qualification.

As the standings currently show, Ghana leads Group I with 16 points from 7 games, while Chad sits at the bottom with 1 point from 7 games. Comoros is second with 12 points from 6 games, followed by Madagascar with 10 points from 6 games, and Mali with 9 points from 6 games. The Central African Republic has 5 points from 6 games. The outcome of the upcoming matches will be crucial in determining the final qualification spots.
