The Black Stars of Ghana secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, September 8, 2025, in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Alexander Djiku’s decisive goal in the 49th minute, courtesy of a Jordan Ayew corner kick, proved to be the match-winner.
The first half was cautious, with Mali recording the only shot on target, while Antoine Semenyo went close for Ghana following an incisive run from Mohammed Kudus. After Djiku’s opener, Mali pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but Ghana’s defense held firm, with goalkeeper Benjamin Asare making key saves and Salisu and Djiku repelling multiple attacks. Thomas Partey played a crucial role in managing the game and absorbing Mali’s late pressure, helping Ghana secure all three points.
The victory lifts Ghana to the top of Group I with 19 points from eight matches, three points clear of Madagascar and four points ahead of Comoros. Mali, on the other hand, sits fourth in the group with 12 points, making it mathematically impossible for them to qualify for the World Cup.
The Black Stars will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures. With this win, Ghana remains firmly in control of their qualification path, keeping their World Cup dreams alive. Ghana’s next fixtures are against the Central African Republic and Comoros, and a win or two draws would seal their place in the global tournament.
