The Ghana Chamber of Mines has condemned threats made by the Artisanal Small-Scale Miners Association (ASSMA) against AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, calling for respect for the rule of law and protection of national assets. The Chamber views the ultimatum issued by ASSMA as a threat to peace and stability in the mining industry and the Obuasi municipality.
The Chamber corrected misinformation about security operations and land tenure at the Obuasi Mine, stating that military personnel deployed to the mine are state security officials protecting a strategic national asset under the National Security Council’s mandate. AGAG has relinquished 60% of its concession area to the government for community development and small-scale mining.
The Chamber emphasized AGAG’s socio-economic contributions, including investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure through its 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan and Obuasi Community Trust Fund. Ongoing tripartite discussions between AGAG, government, and small-scale miners aim to resolve issues peacefully.
The Chamber called on the government to treat the ultimatum as a security matter, ASSMA to engage in constructive dialogue, and the media to verify claims to avoid inflaming tensions.
