Ghana is stepping up its efforts to promote clean energy and reduce dependence on traditional biomass. The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is driving this initiative, with plans to increase access to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) across the country.

The NPA’s Chief Executive, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, emphasized the importance of LPG in achieving Ghana’s climate and environmental goals. He noted that widespread adoption of LPG could protect forests, reduce indoor air pollution, and promote public health.

The NPA is implementing the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) to ensure safe filling, inspection, and distribution of LPG cylinders through licensed bottling plants. Additionally, the government plans to distribute 457,000 LPG cookstoves and accessories over the next two years to increase access to cleaner cooking fuels. The NPA is also working with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to expand LPG infrastructure, improve distribution logistics, and ensure equitable access across rural and urban communities.

These initiatives aim to make LPG the preferred household energy choice, reducing Ghana’s dependence on wood fuel and promoting a cleaner, healthier environment.
