Ghana is mourning the loss of its longest-serving First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away on October 23, 2025, at the age of 76. A state funeral is underway at the Black Star Square in Accra, with dignitaries, politicians, and citizens paying their respects to the late former First Lady.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was a pioneering figure in Ghanaian politics, serving as First Lady from 1979 to 2001. She was a champion of women’s empowerment, founding the 31st December Women’s Movement, which mobilized and empowered women across Ghana.

A native of Cape Coast, Nana Konadu was born on November 17, 1948, to J.O.T. Agyeman and Felicia Agyeman. She attended Achimota School and later studied Art and Textiles at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Nana Konadu’s legacy extends beyond her role as First Lady. She was a politician, businesswoman, and advocate for women’s rights, making history as the first woman to run for President of Ghana in 2016.

Tributes have poured in from across Ghana and beyond, with President John Mahama declaring three days of national mourning in her honor.
