The Ghana Football Association has introduced a groundbreaking policy guaranteeing a minimum monthly salary of GH¢1,500 for Ghana Premier League players. This landmark decision aims to significantly improve player welfare and elevate the standards of domestic football.

The GFA’s initiative follows a collaborative meeting with the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), reflecting a joint commitment to professionalizing football standards within Ghana. The new policy will take effect from the beginning of the 2025/26 season.

The minimum salary for Ghana Premier League players is set at GH¢1,500 per month, while players in the Division One League (DOL) and the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will receive a minimum net monthly salary of GH¢700. A standardized contract template for professional players has been implemented, which is already being used by Premier League clubs nationwide.

The GFA believes that the introduction of minimum salaries extends beyond the Premier League, covering players in the Division One League and the Women’s Premier League. This move aims to enhance player welfare and the overall quality of the domestic game.

The establishment of the salary floor is described as a significant “policy shift,” which follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PFAG before the association’s last Congress. The GFA is confident that the new policy will improve player welfare, strengthen the value of the Ghanaian game, and create a more professional and sustainable future for players and clubs alike.

GFA President Kurt Okraku hailed the development as a major boost for Ghanaian footballers, saying, “This decision reflects our firm commitment to protecting the welfare of our footballers and ensuring they are rewarded fairly for their talent and hard work.” The initiative is expected to benefit players significantly, contributing to better living conditions and a more robust football ecosystem in Ghana.
