The Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has urged the government to rigorously enforce building regulations following the collapse of a four-storey building at Accra Newtown on Sunday, March 29.
Speaking during a visit to the site, he stressed the need for a comprehensive structural assessment to determine the cause of the incident and to establish whether the remaining portions of the building are safe for use.
He indicated that should engineers find the structure defective, it must be completely demolished and reconstructed to prevent further risk to lives.
“It is important that we ensure that our building codes are adhered to. If the structure is unsafe, as you said, with the engineering, then it must be broken down. We must even now see if this is the only part of the building that is defective and why it has collapsed.
“Of course, if the rest of the structures are unsafe, then they must be broken down and a new structure erected. We can’t live like this,” he said.
The Ga Mantse further extended his sympathies to the families of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery, as authorities continue investigations into the incident.
“I am praying for a speedy recovery for all who have been admitted to the hospital. I hear nine have been discharged. For those who have passed, we say our condolences,” he said.
