The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has vehemently denied allegations that he approved a $5.2 million contract to renovate Ghana’s embassy in Benin. In a Facebook post on Monday, September 8, 2025, Ablakwa described the claim as “false” and urged the public to treat it with “utter contempt”.
Ablakwa emphasized that he has not awarded any embassy renovation contract worldwide since assuming office as Foreign Minister. In fact, he revealed that he canceled a $3.5 million single-source contract for the renovation of Ghana’s embassy in Abidjan, awarded on November 7, 2024, to save public funds. This decision, he said, demonstrates his commitment to transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
The Minister assured the Ghanaian people that he will work tirelessly with integrity to achieve President Mahama’s Reset Agenda. Ablakwa’s denial comes as the administration pushes to transition Ghana’s diplomatic missions from rented premises to state-owned facilities, aiming to save $15 million annually. By canceling unnecessary contracts and promoting transparency, Ablakwa is taking steps to ensure that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is managed efficiently and effectively.
