The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has emphasized the importance of safeguarding the Ghana cedi, the nation’s sole legitimate currency. Speaking at the launch of the Cedi@60 celebrations on October 28, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre, Dr. Forson encouraged citizens to protect the cedi’s value and refrain from using foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar, for transactions.

Dr. Forson stressed that using other currencies for transactions devalues the cedi and urged Ghanaians to trade with the local currency. “We must all be vanguards by ensuring that the Cedi’s value is maintained. We must eschew the act that seeks to undermine the value of the currency, particularly the pricing of goods and services in foreign currency, the US dollar.”

The Minister reiterated the government’s dedication to preserving the cedi’s stability and promoting economic sovereignty. “The Cedi is the only currency we have, let us protect it and let us trade with it and let us defend it with all vim within us.” He emphasized that the sixth decade of the cedi’s existence represents a “new dawn” in Ghana’s pursuit of economic sovereignty and resilience.

The Cedi@60 celebration marks six decades of the cedi’s existence, symbolizing national sovereignty and resilience in the face of economic challenges. The government remains optimistic that sustained discipline, coupled with stronger oversight of currency practices, will reinforce confidence in the cedi and support long-term economic growth.

The celebration is themed “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability and Economic Resilience,” reflecting heightened public interest in the performance of the cedi in recent years, amid inflation pressures, global economic shocks, and local reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability.
