Fenerbahçe officially announced the departure of José Mourinho as their head coach on August 29, 2025, following a disappointing 1-0 aggregate defeat to Benfica in the UEFA Champions League play-off round. The decision to part ways was made after a board meeting, and the club wishes Mourinho success in his future endeavors.
Mourinho’s tenure at Fenerbahçe lasted just over a year, marked by controversy and inconsistent performances. Despite guiding the team to a second-place finish in the 2024-25 Süper Lig, the club failed to meet key objectives under his leadership. Mourinho’s outspoken criticism of Turkish referees led to a one-match ban and fines after a 3-2 win over Trabzonspor.
There was also a heated exchange with Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk in April, which resulted in Mourinho grabbing Buruk’s nose after a 2-1 Turkish Cup loss. Before the Benfica clash, Mourinho’s comments questioning the squad’s morale reportedly frustrated the club’s hierarchy.
The club’s stock rose 6% following the announcement, reflecting fan and investor anticipation for change. Fenerbahçe now faces the urgent task of appointing a new manager to lead them in the Europa League and challenge Galatasaray’s domestic dominance.
