Fair Treatment Await Ofori-Atta in SML Scandal – Ayine Assures

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will face fair treatment in the ongoing investigation into the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) scandal, Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine assured on Thursday, December 18, 2025. Dr. Ayine made the assurance at the Government Accountability Series, emphasizing Ghana’s commitment to due process.

The government has submitted an extradition request to the United States, seeking Ofori-Atta’s return to face 78 charges related to the scandal. The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) alleges Ofori-Atta introduced SML to Ghana and influenced a lucrative contract, causing the country a loss of 1.4 million Ghana cedis.

Dr. Ayine reiterated Ghana’s dedication to transparency and accountability, urging citizens to trust the legal process

Ayine emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta faces trial in Ghana without undermining the due process set for a fair prosecution of suspects.

“On behalf of the government and His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, we have taken the necessary steps to bring him home to face trial. If I were him, I would join the next available flight. Under my watch, he will not be treated unfairly; he will go through due process and be prosecuted just like any other person,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Dr Dominic Ayine, has announced that his office has formally transmitted a request for the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and an alleged accomplice, Ernest Akore, from the United States.
