Dr. Charity Binka, a renowned public health expert, has emphasized the crucial role of the media in disseminating accurate information to the public, stating that “When media is well informed, the public is well-protected.” She made this remark at a workshop organized by the Health Journalists Association of Ghana (HEJAG) in Accra.

Dr. Binka stressed that a well-informed media is essential in combating misinformation and promoting public health. She urged journalists to prioritize fact-checking and verification of information before dissemination, adding that the media has a responsibility to hold those in power accountable.

The workshop aimed to equip health journalists with the necessary skills and knowledge to report accurately on health issues, including COVID-19, vaccination, and other public health concerns. Dr. Binka encouraged journalists to ask tough questions and seek clarification when necessary, ensuring that the public receives accurate and reliable information.

HEJAG President, Mr. Thomas Awortwi, echoed Dr. Binka’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between health professionals and journalists in promoting public health awareness. The workshop marked a significant step towards strengthening the capacity of health journalists in Ghana, ultimately contributing to a more informed and protected public.
