ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as its sole candidate for the position of Chairperson of the African Union (AU) in 2027. The endorsement was announced by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, after the 68th ECOWAS Heads of State Summit in Abuja, Nigeria.

The ECOWAS Council of Ministers had earlier unanimously endorsed President Mahama’s candidature, citing his experience, competence, and commitment to African integration and development. The endorsement is seen as a significant boost to Ghana’s diplomatic efforts and President Mahama’s reputation as a seasoned statesman.

“This decisive and overwhelming support by the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government clears all hurdles and makes President John Mahama the AU Chairperson-in-waiting when the rotating AU leadership gets to West Africa’s turn in 2027,” Minister Ablakwa wrote on social media.

President Mahama expressed gratitude for the endorsement, saying he would work tirelessly to advance Africa’s development, peace, and integration.
