The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as West Africa’s sole candidate for the African Union (AU) Chairpersonship in 2027. The endorsement was announced in Abuja, Nigeria, and will be presented to the Authority of Heads of State and Government for formal adoption on Sunday.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed gratitude to ECOWAS member states for their support, citing President Mahama’s vision, competence, and pan-African dedication as key qualifications for the role. The AU Chairmanship rotates annually among Africa’s five regions, with West Africa’s turn coming up in 2027.

President Mahama, who previously served as AU Chairperson from 2012 to 2013, is expected to draw on his experience to champion reforms, promote socio-economic growth, and strengthen continental integration. His leadership is seen as critical for advancing initiatives that improve governance, peace, and stability across Africa.
