The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, will face prosecution on Monday, October 6, 2025. Chairman Wontumi is accused of involvement in illegal mining activities linked to Akonta Mining, specifically encroaching on forest reserves without necessary permits.

The case against Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining has been ongoing, with the government revoking the company’s license on April 21, 2025, after revelations that it had engaged in galamsey operations within the Aboi and Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves in the Western North Region. Akonta Mining has denied these allegations.

Dr. Ayine explained that the investigation into Akonta Mining was thorough, but crucial dockets were concealed under the previous administration. The dockets were only presented to his office two months ago after the police themselves owned up and presented the information. As a result, the charges against Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining, and five others have been signed, and they are waiting for his rights to be read to him before bringing him from Kumasi to Accra for prosecution.

The Attorney General has directed that Chairman Wontumi appear in court on Monday, October 6, 2025, despite his lawyers’ request for a Tuesday appearance. If Chairman Wontumi fails to appear on Monday, Dr. Ayine has warned that he will order his arrest. With the prosecution set to begin, the case will determine the fate of Chairman Wontumi and the others involved in the alleged illegal mining activities.
