Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025. He arrived at the CID Headquarters in Accra around 9:30 a.m., accompanied by his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi.
The investigation centers on Akonta Mining Limited, a company linked to Chairman Wontumi, which is accused of engaging in illegal mining activities. The Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, had warned that Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to report to the CID, as charges against him had already been signed.
The case has been ongoing, with progress stalled due to allegedly concealed dockets from the previous administration. Dr. Ayine stated that some mining concessions were reportedly sold for up to GH₵300,000, while others were exchanged for gold royalties.
Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, expressed his client’s willingness to cooperate with investigators, describing the Attorney General’s warning as unnecessary. “We respect the invitation and we will honour it, but I think the warning that followed that announcement was unnecessary,” he said, adding that his client has always cooperated with investigators.
The charges against Chairman Wontumi include allegations of undertaking mining operations without a license and pollution of water bodies. Wontumi has consistently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that his company operates within the law.
