Joseph Akasake Abaa, the Bongo District Chief Executive (DCE), has died following a short illness. The cause of his death is currently unknown.
Sources close to the family indicated that he passed away at the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
Alhaji Tahiru Aberinga, Bongo Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Confirmed the news in an interview, describing the development as “shocking and unexpected.”
The late DCE was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama and confirmed by members of the Bongo District Assembly in April 2025. Before he was appointed DCE, Mr. Abaa had served the people of Zorko-Goo-Awaah as an Assembly Member for three consecutive terms.

He also held several positions within the NDC, including Bongo Constituency Youth Organiser and later Constituency Secretary in 2022.
In addition to his political career, he worked as a storekeeper at the Sirigu Integrated Senior High School and Zuarungu Senior High School.
Mr. Abaa’s passing is a significant loss to the people of Bongo and the wider constituency he served over the years.
