The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has appealed to the government to grant financial clearance to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to recruit more academic and administrative staff. The current lecturer-student ratio is unfavorable, with approximately 1:67, placing a strain on the university’s dedicated lecturers and threatening the quality of teaching and learning.
The Asantehene made this call while addressing the 59th Congregation of KNUST, where 17,132 students graduated, including 14,764 undergraduates and 2,338 postgraduate students. He emphasized that the nation’s universities must be empowered to provide instruction and mentorship to shape leaders, innovators, and custodians of Ghana’s destiny.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, highlighted the university’s commitment to impactful research, awarding over GH¢1.5 million to 29 senior members from the KNUST research fund. The Asantehene also expressed excitement about the government’s commitment to completing the 18-year-old KNUST Teaching Hospital and constructing new lecture theatre.
The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, was the guest of honor, and was joined by the Interior Minister, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Members of Parliament, traditional leaders, and some prominent alumni of the school.
