Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, has sparked controversy by suggesting that President John Mahama is benefiting from the economic foundation laid by the previous Akufo-Addo administration. Amoah argues that the current government has yet to implement significant policy interventions, implying that Mahama’s economic successes are built on the progress made by his predecessor.
Amoah points to key economic indicators, such as GDP growth increasing from 3.4% to 6.3%, agriculture growing from 2.7% to 4.5%, and industry expanding from 4.3% to 8.9%, as evidence of the Akufo-Addo administration’s effective economic management. He attributes Ghana’s current economic challenges to global factors, including COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war, rather than domestic policy failures.
Amoah’s comments come as President Mahama has criticized the previous government’s economic policies, claiming they left the country with significant challenges. However, Amoah dismisses these claims as misleading, arguing that Mahama should focus on implementing policies rather than blaming his predecessor.
