The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, led a special taskforce from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to remove unauthorized billboards, banners, and advertising materials mounted on the Kaneshie footbridge on Monday, September 8, 2025. This operation is part of the Assembly’s “Reset Accra” agenda, aimed at beautifying the city, decongesting trading spaces, and improving public safety.

The Mayor emphasized that the Assembly will not tolerate the misuse of public spaces, stressing that billboards and posters on pedestrian walkways endanger lives by obstructing visibility and posing potential hazards to pedestrians. He warned that similar enforcement actions will be rolled out across all sub-metros, insisting that advertisers must comply with permit regulations before mounting signage.
The Mayor directed the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to prohibit vehicles from parking or loading under the Kaneshie footbridge, citing congestion and public safety concerns. The AMA will ensure that advertisers comply with permit regulations to avoid further action.
During the visit, Mayor Allotey engaged with market women at the Kaneshie Market and announced plans to establish a Women’s Bank. The bank aims to provide financial support and credit facilities to empower female traders. He also encouraged the women to support the Assembly’s work by observing sanitation by-laws, highlighting the importance of maintaining a clean market environment for public health and attractiveness to shoppers.

The “Reset Accra” programme has seen AMA intensify efforts in sanitation enforcement, city beautification, and decongestion campaigns. The programme’s goals include:
Ensuring cleanliness and adherence to health standards Improving the aesthetic appeal of the city. Reducing congestion in trading spaces and improving traffic flow.
The mayor clarified that the enforcement exercise was not aimed at traders or transport operators but rather at protecting lives and improving the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. He added that maintaining a clean and safe environment is critical to public health and will enhance the market’s attractiveness to shoppers.
