Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been arrested by police. The arrest comes after Abronye made headlines for formally requesting political asylum in eight countries, citing “consistent, escalating political persecution, threats to my life, and systemic abuse of state security powers by the current Government of Ghana”.

Although the current arrest details are not available, Abronye DC has had previous run-ins with the law. In February 2022, he was arrested and charged with publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace. This followed his claim on a radio show that former President John Mahama was planning to stage a coup.

In the previous incident, Abronye DC was granted GH₵ 100,000 bail with two sureties who had to deposit their passports at the court registry. He was charged after alleging that former President Mahama had met with Al-Qaeda militants to plan a coup, which the police deemed untrue and likely to cause a breach of peace.

Abronye DC’s recent asylum requests have sparked controversy, with the NPP stalwart citing persecution and threats to his life under the current government. The countries he has requested asylum from include.
