Heart of Lions head coach Bashir Hayford has praised the defensive discipline of Nations FC following their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Heart of Lions at the Kpando Sports Stadium in the Ghana Premier League matchday 30 fixture.
Nations FC secured all three points courtesy of a first-half strike from Kelvin Ampoful, who found the breakthrough just before halftime to silence the home supporters in Kpando.
The visitors adopted a compact defensive approach after taking the lead and frustrated Heart of Lions throughout the second half as the hosts struggled to create clear-cut opportunities despite enjoying large spells of possession.
Speaking after the game, Hayford admitted his side performed better after the break but credited Nations FC for their organization and resilience at the back led by center back and captain Razak Simpson.
“In the second half, we outplayed Nations FC, but they defended really well. The ball barely crossed the centre line in their half, yet they stayed solid defensively throughout the second half.”Bashir Hayford
The experienced tactician also acknowledged that his players lacked the cutting edge needed to break down a disciplined defensive structure despite their attacking intent.
“We pushed very hard and tried different approaches, but sometimes you have to give credit to the opponent. They stayed compact, closed the spaces, and made things very difficult for us.”Bashir Hayford
Crucial Away Win For Nations
The result marked an important milestone for Nations FC, who recorded only their second away victory of the Ghana Premier League season after 15 matches on the road.

Their only previous away triumph had come against bottom-placed Eleven Wonders earlier in the campaign. The victory could prove crucial in Nations FC’s battle to avoid relegation as they climbed into 11th position on the league table with 41 points.
Despite the improvement, the club remains only three points above the relegation zone, highlighting the intense competition in the lower half of the standings.
For Heart of Lions, the defeat further deepened concerns over their form at a critical stage of the season. The loss was their fourth home defeat of the campaign following previous setbacks against Bibiani Gold Stars, Medeama SC and Aduana FC.
Relegation Battle Intensifies
Heart of Lions are now without a win in their last three league matches, a poor run that has dragged them dangerously close to the relegation zone with only three matches remaining in the season.
The Kpando-based side currently sit 13th on the table and are just one point above the drop zone, increasing the pressure on the team heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

Nations FC, who have already secured a place in the FA Cup final, appear to have gained renewed confidence from the victory and will hope the momentum can help them finish the season strongly.
The relegation battle in the Ghana Premier League remains tightly contested, with several clubs still fighting to preserve their top-flight status. Though Hohoe United (withdrawn) and Eleven Wonders have been confirmed relegated, every point has become increasingly important as the season approaches its conclusion as teams avoid taking the last relegation spot.
Heart of Lions will now turn their attention to a difficult upcoming fixture against FC Samartex 1996, a match many believe could define their survival hopes. Nations FC, meanwhile, will travel to face Young Apostles in another crucial encounter as they seek to widen the gap between themselves and the relegation places.
With only three games left to play, both clubs understand that there is little room for error. While Nations FC will aim to build on their defensive resilience and newfound momentum, Heart of Lions must quickly rediscover winning form to avoid being dragged deeper into the relegation fight.
